If you can keep your head
when all about you men losing theirs and blaming in on you,

만약 모두 이성을 잃고 너를 탓할 때
냉정을 유지할 수 있다면,

If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you
But, make allowances for their doubting, too.

만약 모두가 너를 믿지 않을 때
네 자신을 믿고 그들의 의심까지 감싸안을 수 있다면.

If you can wait but not be tired of waiting.
or being lied about, dont deal in lies 

만약 기다리면서도 기다림에 지치지 않는다면,
속임을 당하고 속임으로 되갚지 않는다면,

Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
and yet don't look too good nor talk too wise

미움을 당하고 미움으로 되갚지 않는다면,
그리고 너무 선량한 체, 너무 현명한 체 하지 않는다면,

If you can dream but not make dreams your master,

만약 꿈을 꾸면서도 꿈의 노예가 되지 않을 수 있다면,

If you can think and not make thoughts your aim,

만약 생각하면서도 생각을 목표로 삼지 않을 수 있다면,

If you can meet with triumph and disaster,
and treat those two imposters just the same,

만약 승리와 재앙을 만나고도
이 두 협잡꾼을 똑같이 대할 수 있다면,

If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools

만약 네가 말한 진실이 악인들에 의해 왜곡되어
어리석은 자들을 옭아매는 덫이 되는 것을 참을 수 있다면,

Or watch the things you gave your life to broken, and stoop and build them up with worn-out tools

네 일생을 바친 것들이 무너지는 것을 보고도
낡은 연장을 집어들고 다시 세울 수 있다면,

If you can make one heap of all your winnings and risk it on one turn of pitch and toss,
and lose and start again at your beginnings and never breathe a word about your loss,

만약 애써 얻은 모든 것을 단 한번의 도박에 걸 수 있다면, 
그것을 다 잃고도 다시 시작하면서 한마디 불평도 하지 않을 수 있다면,

If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew to serve your turn long after they are gone,
and to hold on when there is nothing in you but the will that says to them "hold on"

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,

or walk with kings nor lose the common touch
왕들과 같이 거닐면서도 오만하지 않을 수 있다면,

If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
만약 적도 사랑하는 친구도 너를 해칠 수 없게 된다면,

If all men count with you but none too much,
만약 모두가 너와 함께하지만, 그들이 너를 너무 의존하게 만들지 않게 만들 수 있다면,

If you can fill the unforgiving minute
with sixty seconds' worth of distance run,

만약 거리낌 없이 흘려보내는 1분을
60초의 장거리 달리기로 채울 수 있다면,

Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
and which is more, you'll be a man, my son

그러면 이 세상과 그 안의 모든 것이 네 것이 되리라.

#Flames of envy

It's really interesting is with all this enormous increase in living standards and freedom, and diminishment of racial inequities, and all the huge progress that has come, 

삶의 수준이 엄청나게 향상되고
자유도 얻고, 인종간의 불평등도 감소됐음에도 불구하고

but, people are less happy about the state of affairs than they were when things were way tougher

삶이 더 거칠었던 과거보다 지금의 사람들이 행복을 덜 느낍니다.

and that has a very simple explanation
the world is not driven by greed, it's driven by envy

이건 아주 간단한 설명으로 이해됩니다.

세상은 욕심에 의해 움직이는 것이 아니라 질투에 의해 움직이고 있기 때문이죠.

and so the fact that everybody's five times better off than they used to be,
they take it for granted.
All they think about is somebody else having more now and it's not fair that he should have it and they don't 

우리 모두가 과거보다 5 배나 더 잘 살게 된 걸 우리는 당연하게 여기고 있고,
오로지 남이 나보다 더 많이 가진 것에만 신경을 씁니다.
남이 가지고 있으니 나도 가져야 한다는 것이죠.

That's the reason that God came down and told Moses that he couldn't envy his neighbor's wife or even his donkey

그게 바로 하느님이 모세에게 "네 이웃의 아내와 심지어 그의 당나귀조차 탐내지 말라." 라고 했던 이유입니다.

I mean, even the old Jews were having trouble with envy
So It's built into the nature of things

고대 유대인들조차도 질투로 인해 애를 먹었습니다.
우리 본성에 내재되어 있는 것이니까요.

Other people play to the envy in order to advance their own political careers
We have whole networks now that they want to pour gasoline on the flames of envy

어떤 사람들은 자신들의 정치적 경력을 위해 사람들의 질투심을 가지고 놉니다.
우리 모두 네트워크화 되어 있다는 점을 이용해서 그들은 '질투의 화염'에 기름을 부어버리려고 하죠.

But if you stop to think of the pretentious expenditures of the rich

Who in the hell needs a Rolex watch so you can get mugged for it

 
부자들의 허세 소비를 가만 생각해 보면
롤렉스 시계가 도대체 왜 필요합니까? 강도에게 선물해주고 싶어서요?

You know, I mean it's -yet, everybody wants to have a pretentious expenditure
That helps drive demand in our modern capitalist society
it drives the dissatifaction

모두가 허세 소비를 하고 싶어 하고
그게 현대 자본주의 사회에서 수요를 창출하는 데 도움이 된다고는 하지만,
그것은 우리의 불만도 증폭시키죠.

my advice to the young people is don't go there
To hell with the pretentious expenditure.

제가 젊은 친구들에게 드리는 조언은 그쪽은 쳐다도보지 말라는 겁니다.
허세 가득한 소비로 큰 행복을 찾을 순 없을거에요.

겸손하고
겸허하며,  
너무 부족하지도
너무 과하지도 않는 
너무 위축되길 바라지 않는
